Abu Dhabi Art
Classy, small, elegant fair. Loved the grounds and the organization, and the location of the art fair was super great as well. A five minute drive from the newly opened Louvre Abu Dhabi, and a 3 minute drive to some of the most beautiful beaches! Does not get much better. Check out both the Louvre and the beaches of Saadiyat Island in my other posts!
Many UAE based galleries, as well as other Arab and international presence. Loved seeing some of my favorite familiar faces and galleries, and the many of the artworks were quite remarkable as well.
Artworks I found extremely timely, culturally provoking, and holding a strong political message were Manal Al Dowayan's works at Quadro Fine Art Gallery. Timely works of beads carrying Saudi women's first names, drawing attention to the fact that not using a woman's name, but rather referring to her as the mother of, daughter of, or some other family related acronym, has neither a religious or cultural basis! The woman behind the wheel, the ugliness of modern industrialism, and the symbolism of freedom and flight of birds, were all issues present in her artworks.
