The Affordable Art Fair - Amsterdam
First things first! How cool is it to be at a fair where people are literally walking out of the fair carrying their just acquired artworks!! That is the upside of an Affordable art fair I guess.
Small, cozy fair with a lot to see and actually buy, and what better place to be than the friendly, quaint, quirky, pretty, and elegant city of Amsterdam. Home to many great artists, this city does not seize to amaze me with it's level of elegance and charm. Check out my recommendations for areas and places to stay in my other posts.
But back to the fair. With a super friendly and cordial Director, the fair was a delight. A great variety of galleries and young artists. For me it was also a great introduction to some cool Dutch galleries, as well as some interesting European ones.
My favorite moment was meeting the Dutch artist Jan Tervoort and being introduced to his work. I had an interesting chat with Jan and he told me that his paintings symbolize the inside of human being, deep inside, but as one cannot see past the human skin, he uses many layers of glass paint in only three basic colors; red, orange, and yellow. So layer after layer of paint to come up with his beautiful artworks.
What was more interesting is how he got his now assistant/co-creator/colleague/artist in residence to start his artistic career. New found artist, aka Andreas Mulders, was working in the advertising business for a pharmaceutical company, and mostly needed his glass of Scotch to unwind and relax. He has since found his calling, thanks to Jan, and now finds solace and gratitude in creating art. He has collaborated with Jan on some pieces.
The Affordable Art Fair also takes place in 9 other cities across Europe, in NYC, Singapore and Hong Kong.
