The Independent - NYC
One thing I can say about the Independent is FUN!
Eclectic vibes and a young, hip, and alternative crowd. The same can be said about the art as well. One gets the feeling one is there to enjoy looking at the art rather than having to decide whether to buy any artwork or not! Now I’m not sure if that is necessarily a good thing for the artists and galleries, but for us art enthusiasts, it sure is great!
There are many interesting dialogues one can have, as many of the pieces are, for sure, conversation starters, and the space around me was very open and welcoming; with all the galleries sort of intertwined and co-existing creatively.
Scattered out garbage bags as art installations where a far cry from the Sesame Street characters in larger than life size, and the nude and transgender Madonna sculpture was in stark contrast to the pins and artistic horse saddle and electric guitar displays.
There is much harmony – amongst the art, galleries, artists, and visitors - and the space somehow gives every artwork the chance to be viewed, admired, and singled out.
A fantastic mix of bizarre and beautiful, exciting and different.
