Miami Art Week
Welcome to Miami!
What can I say about Miami Art Week?!
If it’s your first time in Miami, as was the case for me, you will find it very difficult to take it all in. First, it’s December, and you’ve most probably just flown in from somewhere pretty cold, so the great summer weather will automatically scream out; “Sun! Sea! BEACH!” Beach, beach, beach is all I wanted to do when I first got to Miami, but having tons of work and MANY fairs to go to, I started to plan my days ahead, to make sure I get a few hours off at some point, to hit the beach, sunbathe, swim, and take it all in.
Miami art week is indeed overwhelming as there is so much to see and do. I was there a week, and still missed 2 or 3 fairs; the most disappointing of which was that I never made it to Untitled!! I heard it was great (some even said it was the best fair they attended), and I am really looking forward to visiting it next year; it will be the first fair on my list.
I loved Art Miami and Context, really liked Scope and Pulse, and of course highly enjoyed and appreciated Art Basel. Overwhelming installations, larger than life artworks and sculptures, interactions, discussions, and an entire week of beautiful and astounding art! A lot of drugs, sex, religion and politics in so many of the artworks, leaving room for much to talk about and ponder, but generally a very relaxed atmosphere all-around, which is very befitting of such a fun and diverse city.
All in all, In Miami there is something on offer for every taste; whether you are new to the art world or an old time collector, or just someone who would like to add a cultural twist to an otherwise crazy beach party vacation, there is plenty of it all.
